Buying Guide
Power running boards, also sold as automatic running boards, retractable side steps or power steps, solve a tall truck’s access problem without costing ground clearance. Choosing a good system is mostly about the drive mechanism, how it is triggered and wired, and how well it copes with weather and load.
Each side has a motor driving a pair of hinged linkage arms. When a door opens, a control module powers the motor, the arms swing the step down and out, and the step retracts tight under the rocker panel when the doors close.
Deploy and retract usually take one to two seconds. Better systems include obstruction detection, which stops the motor if the step meets resistance, and a manual override to keep the steps out for washing or roof access.
Because the board hides when parked or driving, an electric side step keeps the full factory ground clearance and approach angle, which fixed boards cannot.
Plug-and-play harness: connects to the vehicle’s diagnostic (OBD) port or door circuits and reads the door-open signal. Fastest to install, but it must match the vehicle’s electrical system.
Door sensor kit: magnetic or switch sensors on each door jamb. It works on almost any vehicle but adds install time.
Either way, the module takes power from the battery through an inline fuse. Check that the harness, fuse rating and connectors are included and labeled.
Step: extruded aluminum with a non-slip tread pad; ask for the rated load per side.
Motors and module: sealed against water and road salt; ask for the ingress protection rating and the operating temperature range.
Linkages and brackets: steel or aluminum with corrosion-resistant coating and stainless hardware; vehicle-specific brackets that bolt to existing body mounting points avoid drilling.
