Key facts about ABS plastic at Yirox

  • ABS grades we use: general-purpose, high-impact, heat-resistant and plating-grade.
  • Plating-grade ABS is chrome plated in-house on a 28-tank automatic rack plating line.
  • ABS resin is dried in desiccant dryers before molding.
  • Made in our IATF 16949 and ISO 9001 certified factory of about 20,000 m² in Wuxi, China.
  • 42 injection molding machines from 90 to 2,500 t, including 3 two-shot machines.
  • Two paint lines with a 3C2B system; painted color held to ΔE*ab ≤1.0.

ABS also pairs with a soft TPE edge in ABS+TPE two-shot parts, and takes a carbon fiber look finish for styling parts.

What Is ABS Plastic?

ABS is an amorphous thermoplastic made from three monomers. Acrylonitrile gives chemical resistance and heat stability, butadiene rubber gives toughness and impact strength, and styrene gives rigidity, gloss and easy processing. By changing the ratio of the three, resin makers produce ABS material grades for high impact, high heat, high gloss or electroplating.

ABS plastic is easy to mold, holds detail well, shrinks little and evenly, and has a smooth surface that takes paint and plating. That is why it is used for so many automotive exterior parts that must look good. Its main weakness is sunlight: unpainted ABS fades and turns chalky outdoors, so exterior ABS parts are almost always painted or plated.

Pros and Cons of ABS for Exterior Parts

Gloss black front lip, spoiler, side skirts and rear diffuser
Gloss black front lip, spoiler, side skirts and rear diffuser

Advantages

  • High surface gloss and fine detail
  • Good impact strength and stiffness
  • Low, even shrinkage for good fit
  • Paints well and can be chrome plated
  • Cost-effective for medium and large volumes

Limitations

  • Poor UV resistance when unpainted
  • Heat resistance lower than PC/ABS
  • Attacked by some solvents and fuels
  • Needs drying before molding

Is ABS Plastic UV Resistant?

Standard ABS is not UV resistant. In sunlight, the butadiene rubber phase breaks down: the surface loses gloss, fades to grey and can become brittle. For exterior use, ABS is protected by paint with a UV-absorbing clearcoat, or by chrome plating. If a part must stay unpainted, ASA is the better choice because its acrylic rubber does not degrade in the same way.

Design Tips for ABS Injection Molding

DFM wall-thickness analysis of an exterior plastic part on a monitor
DFM wall-thickness analysis of an exterior plastic part on a monitor
  • Keep wall thickness even, typically 2.0–3.5 mm for exterior trim.
  • Add 1–2° draft on smooth faces and more on textured faces.
  • Keep ribs at 50–60% of the wall to avoid sink marks on show surfaces.
  • Avoid sharp inside corners; use radii of at least 0.5 mm.
  • Place gates and ejector pins away from Class A surfaces.
  • For chrome parts, avoid deep blind holes and sharp edges where plating builds up.

ABS Parts We Make

These parts are made both as universal-fit items and as vehicle-specific parts, for example for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, Toyota Hilux and Ford F-150 programs.

09 — Capability

Chrome Plated ABS

Plating-grade ABS (PA-727 / HR-500 equivalent) is the only material we chrome plate. The plating bath etches the butadiene phase at the surface to create anchor points for the first metal layer, which is why plating-grade ABS with a controlled rubber content gives the best adhesion.

Our line builds copper 18–22 μm, nickel 12–18 μm and chrome 0.2–0.3 μm, a total of 32 μm or more, with trivalent chrome as standard. Read more on our chrome plating on plastic page.

Painting ABS

ABS takes paint without an adhesion promoter after cleaning and pre-treatment. We paint ABS in a 3C2B system on two lines in ISO 7 and ISO 8 clean rooms, with total film thickness of 35–50 μm, color ΔE*ab ≤1.0 and cross-hatch adhesion grade 0–1. See piano black and matte black finishes.

What Buyers Say About Our Materials and Finishes

Buyers on material, finish and quality questions we worked through with them.

“Chrome parts can look perfect in photos, but the real test is checking the edges and reflections under proper lighting. What stood out was how seriously they took our surface requirements. We spent far less time going back and forth over finish quality.”
Quality Control ManagerAutomotive Chrome Trim Project
“Our biggest concern wasn’t the first sample. It was whether the next 500 pieces would look the same. The team understood our expectations for coating consistency, adhesion and surface defects. Having those details addressed before production gave us much more confidence in the order.”
Purchasing ManagerElectroplated Automotive Components
“Most suppliers were happy to quote our drawings as they were. Yirox pointed out two areas that might cause trouble during molding. It wasn’t the answer we expected, but it was exactly the kind of feedback we needed.”

14 — FAQ

FAQ

What is ABS plastic used for in cars?

ABS is used for grilles, mirror caps, spoilers, front lips, diffusers, trim, wheel covers and many interior parts, mainly where the part is painted or chrome plated.

Is ABS plastic strong enough for exterior parts?

Yes. ABS has good impact strength and stiffness for styling parts. For parts near heat or with high impact loads, PC/ABS or PP/TPO may be better.

Is ABS plastic UV resistant?

Not on its own. Exterior ABS should be painted with a UV-protective clearcoat or chrome plated. For unpainted parts, use ASA.

Can ABS be chrome plated?

Yes, plating-grade ABS can. We plate ABS equivalent to PA-727 or HR-500 on our own 28-tank line.

Are the ABS properties on this page your test data?

No. They are typical published datasheet ranges. Your grade and test results are confirmed in the quote and sample stage.

What is the minimum order for ABS parts?

We offer low MOQ on selected items. The quantity is confirmed in your quote.
