Buying Guide

How to Choose a Hard Roll-Up Tonneau Cover

A hard roll up tonneau cover uses rows of aluminum slats joined by a flexible backing. It rolls toward the cab like a soft cover but locks and resists impacts like a hard one, so it suits buyers who want security without giving up bed space.

1. Slat Construction

Slats are usually aluminum, sometimes with a honeycomb or foam core for stiffness. Thicker slats carry more weight and feel more solid.

A textured matte finish hides scratches and stays cooler in the sun than gloss.

2. Roll Style

Manual roll: the cover rolls into a coil at the cab end and is strapped in place.

Roller lid with canister: spring-assisted slats retract into a canister at the bulkhead, keeping them clean and out of the way.

Check how much bed space the coil or canister takes behind the cab.

3. Locking and Rails

Most hard roll-ups lock at the tailgate end, or with the tailgate when it locks.

Rails clamp to the bed or bolt in. A drain system in the rails channels water out through the bed corners.

Installation

How to Install a Hard Roll-Up Tonneau Cover

About an hour with two people. Follow the supplied instructions.

  1. Place the side rails. Set the rails on the bed rails and fix them with the clamps, checking they are parallel.
  2. Fit the front unit. Install the cab-end coil holder or canister against the bulkhead.
  3. Connect the drain tubes. Route drain tubes through the bed corners so water exits under the truck.
  4. Unroll and latch. Unroll the slats to the tailgate and engage the rear latch.
  5. Check the lock. Test the lock and tailgate seal, and adjust the rails if the slats rub.

FAQ

Hard Roll-Up Tonneau Cover FAQ

What is a roller lid?

A roller lid is a hard roll-up cover whose slats retract into a canister at the cab end, often spring-assisted.

Are hard roll-up covers secure?

They are much harder to cut than vinyl and lock at the tailgate end, which makes them a good choice for tools and luggage.

Does the canister take bed space?

Yes, usually a few inches behind the cab. Manual roll-ups use a coil instead.

Can you open a hard roll-up part way?

Canister roller lids stop at any point; manual covers are usually fully open or closed.

How much weight can a hard roll-up hold?

It depends on the design; check the rated load for each cover and do not stand on it unless it is rated for that.

Hard roll-up or hard tri-fold?

Roll-up gives full bed access; tri-fold panels are stiffer and quick to flip open.

What is the MOQ?

Low MOQ on selected items.

What should I send with an inquiry?

Truck model and year, cab type, bed length and any bed liner or rack.

Tell us your vehicle model, year and the parts you need.
